WHAT DO I NEED TO ENTER CANADA AS A JAPANESE CITIZEN?

The Canada electronic travel authorization is only available to Japanese nationals who are entering Canada by air. Travelers arriving via land or sea cannot apply for an eTA, but may instead need identification and a visa or other travel documents.

The eTA for Japanese citizens is intended for visitors who are traveling to Canada for the purposes of:

  • Tourism, especially short tourist stays
  • Business trips
  • Transiting through Canada to their onward destination
  • Medical treatment or consultation

Japanese nationals in possession of the eTA are able to transit without a visa, providing that they are entering and leaving via a Canadian airport. Foreign nationals who do not qualify for the eTA are required to have a visa to enter and leave Canada.

REQUIREMENTS FOR JAPANESE CITIZENS VISITING CANADA

There are several requirements necessary in order to apply for the Canada eTA. All applicants must have:

The eTA is associated with the specific passport used in the application and cannot be transferred. Japanese citizens with dual citizenship must apply with a single passport and use it to travel to Canada.

Unlike a visa, applicants for the eTA are permitted to enter Canada multiple times within the five-year period. On arrival, border officials will determine how long the eTA holder is allowed to remain in Canada, which is usually a stay of up to six months for each trip.
