Is 1080p Enough? – Benefits, Disadvantages & Best Uses

1080p, otherwise known as 1920×1080, or Full HD, has long been the norm. Whether you’re subscribing to a streaming service or buying a new monitor, the most common resolution is 1080p, but is 1080p really enough?

Is 1080p Enough? (Short Answer)

The resolution of 1080p has enough pixels for viewing videos, images, and movies. It’s also one of the most common resolutions that developers take into consideration when developing websites or software which means you’ll see more content at this quality level!

For all of your viewing needs, whether it is videos or images and more importantly gaming 1080p will do just fine! It might be one of the most common resolutions out there so developers also take this into consideration when creating websites which means that you can view them in their highest quality without being hindered by a lower device resolution.

Common Resolutions And Their Best Use Cases

While 1080p is still the most common resolution, other resolutions are becoming more popular. 4K, or 3840×2160, is becoming increasingly popular for monitors, as well as for streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The higher resolution gives you a crisper image and allows you to see more detail.

  1. 1080p (1920×1080)
  2. 1440p (2560×1440)
  3. 4k (3840×2160)

  • 1080p (1920×1080) – Best & most affordable option for basically all use cases, due to its pixel count, and how common it is.
  • 1440p (2560×1440) – This is a middle ground between standard 1080p and 4k, this is a common resolution among gamers, as it allows for stretch/bigger monitors (usually up to 32 inches), while not compromising much on having the pixels spread out to the extent that it affects the sharpness.
  • 4k (3840×2160) – 4k is currently the limit when it comes to common consumer utilized monitor resolutions. It is the most detailed and sharp resolution you can get and has theoretically 4 times more pixels than a 1080p monitor.

Reasons Why 1080p is enough

1080p or Full HD is still common for various reasons. While it may not be as sharp or detailed as 1440p or 4k, it’s still very sharp, and compared to the pixel count of other devices (older phones for example), 1080p is still considered high resolution.

High-resolution images are often twice as big as low-resolution images. You know that if you’ve ever downloaded a photo from the internet and found it to be enormous in size, even though it looks fine on your monitor. This is because it takes up more pixels than just 1080p.

As opposed to 1440p and 4k monitors, which can cost several hundred dollars more than a similar (and often bigger) 1080p monitor, not everyone is willing to invest almost double the price just to have 2-3 extra pixels.

Reasons Why 1080p is Not Enough

The harsh truth behind 1080p is that it simply isn’t as sharp or detailed as other resolutions are. To have a truly clear and crisp image, you need at least 1440p, with 4k being the best quality you can currently get.

1080p isn’t good for gaming

1080p also falls short when it comes to gaming. While games may still look decent on a 1080p monitor, they will look significantly better on a 1440p or 4k monitor. Games are made to be played in high resolutions, as they allow for a much more immersive experience.

In addition, most gaming monitors come with features that are specifically meant for gamers, such as quick response times and lower levels of input lag. If you’re looking to purchase a monitor specifically for gaming, then you will want to look for a model that supports 1440p or 4k resolutions.

Who Should Buy A 1080p Display:

  • If you want cheap, 1080p is your best bet.

  • 1080p is still common and if you’re looking for an affordable monitor, chances are the one you find will be 1080p.

  • You don’t game much/you can’t afford a 1440p or 4k monitor. If you play games but can’t afford a higher resolution monitor, or your computer can’t handle games on one, then 1080p is probably enough.

  • 1080p is also sufficient if you aren’t all too concerned with sharpness and detail. If you’re looking for an affordable option that does the job (for watching tv/movies or browsing the web/taking email etc), then 1080p should be your choice.

Who Shouldn’t Buy A 1080p Display:

  • Gamers who want to invest in a good monitor for their gaming needs. If you play games often, and only care about having the best possible experience when doing so, then it’s best to invest in a 1440p or 4k monitor.

  • People who are looking for the sharpest and most detailed image. If you’re looking to purchase a monitor that will give you the best possible image quality, then you need to be looking at resolutions higher than 1080p.

  • People who want a large monitor. If you’re looking for a monitor larger than 27 inches, then you will want to purchase one with a resolution higher than 1080p. This is because, at resolutions lower than that, the image starts to look fuzzy and stretched out.

Is 1080p Good Enough For Casual Web Browsing?

Chances are if you’re reading this, your 1080p is good enough. At lower resolutions, text and other on-screen elements start to look blurry and pixelated. This can be distracting and make it difficult to read what’s on the screen.

Is 1080p Good Enough For Movies & Streaming (Netflix, Hulu)?

1080p is still the most common resolution for streaming services and HDTVs. Most devices and services are able to support it, and it provides a good balance between quality and file size.

Is 1080p Good Enough For Photos?

No, if you want to view your photos in the best possible quality, you need a higher resolution than 1080p. This is because, at lower resolutions, photos start to look pixelated and blurry.

1080p vs 1440p: Which Should You Buy?

If you’re looking for a monitor specifically for gaming, then it’s best to purchase one with a resolution higher than 1080p. However, if your computer struggles with high resolutions or you’re not too concerned with high levels of detail and sharpness, then 1080p is fine.

So, is 1080p enough? In short, no. If you want the best possible image quality, then you will need a resolution of 1440p or higher. However, if you’re not willing to spend the extra money for a 1440p or 4k monitor,
