Google Maps is a powerful alternative to Apple Maps, offering a wide range of features and integrated experiences. Now, Google Maps is introducing several new artificial intelligence (AI) features for iOS users to further enhance the trip planning process and improve navigation.

One of the headline features is Immersive View for routes, which aims to make trip planning more convenient, promote sustainable choices, and provide quick activity inspiration. This feature allows users to preview their entire route in a multidimensional view from beginning to end. Whether users are driving, walking, or cycling, they can prepare for each turn with detailed, visual turn-by-turn directions. What sets this feature apart is the time slider that lets users plan their departure based on simulated traffic and weather conditions. It makes it easier to avoid setting out during rainy weather or heavy traffic.

Immersive View is being launched in cities such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo, and Venice. It’s available on both Android and iOS platforms.

In addition to route planning features, Google Maps also improves users’ comprehension of their surroundings once they reach their destination. Lens in Maps (formerly known as Search with Live View) utilizes AI and augmented reality (AR) to assist users in quickly acclimating to their environment. By raising their phones after tapping the Lens icon in the search bar when exiting a subway station or exploring a new neighborhood in search of nearby services like ATMs or coffee shops, users can obtain details about their surroundings. This feature will be available in over 50 new cities starting this week.

Furthermore, Google Maps will offer a more true-to-life representation of the world by adding lifelike buildings across the map. This enhancement improves orientation while driving in downtown areas. Enhanced lane details will also be provided for complex driving situations on highways, helping users feel more prepared, especially during challenging exits.

For electric vehicle (EV) users, Google Maps will provide enhanced charging station information, indicating charger compatibility with specific vehicles and categorizing available chargers as fast, medium, or slow. This feature will help EV users select the most suitable charging station. Additionally, Google Maps will display the last usage time of each charger to avoid directing users to malfunctioning stations.

Google is making improvements to its search capabilities within Google Maps as well. When users search for specific queries like “best place for animal latte art” or “pumpkin patch with my dog,” they will receive visually oriented results generated through AI and advanced image recognition models analyzing billions of photos shared by the Google Maps community. These visually oriented results will allow users to find locations that precisely meet their criteria.

Thematic search results for activities and dining options are also being introduced to inspire new ideas and plans. For example, when searching for “things to do” in Tokyo, Japan, thematic suggestions such as “anime,” “cherry blossoms,” or “art exhibitions” will be provided.

Google Maps continues to evolve and offer innovative features that simplify trip planning and enhance navigation. The new AI-powered features aim to make the entire process more convenient, informative, and interactive for iOS users around the world.
