A rare 2007 original iPhone, boxed and presented as a gift by comedian Drew Carey to a producer of “The Price is Right,” has been sold at auction for an impressive $20,480. This particular iPhone stands out due to its “fantastic provenance,” according to Bonhams auction house.
The timing of this gift is significant, as it occurred less than a month after the first-ever iPhone was released. At the time, Drew Carey had taken over as the host of “The Price is Right” from the renowned Bob Barker. Then-producer of the show, Roger Dobkowitz, recalls that Carey visited the CBS office on July 24, 2007, to familiarize himself with the workings of the show. As a gesture of appreciation, he gifted iPhones to all 11 members of the staff.
Dobkowitz remembers that everyone on the staff was ecstatic about receiving such a cutting-edge device, especially since it had been released just three weeks earlier and was making waves in the news. The model put up for auction is speculated to be an 8GB version, similar to those given to the staff members. Considering their estimated value at that time and assuming they were all 8GB models like Dobkowitz’s, Carey would have paid around $6,589 (equivalent to approximately $9,777 in today’s money).
Interestingly, Dobkowitz chose not to open his gifted iPhone because he didn’t like cell phones and had no intention of using it. Instead, he stored it away in a drawer and only rediscovered it years later when he decided to place it in a safe for safekeeping.
To this day, Drew Carey remains the host of “The Price is Right,” while Dobkowitz retired in 2008. Notably, AppleInsider expressed more admiration for the original iPhone one year prior to Dobkowitz’s discovery.
This successful sale of the original iPhone demonstrates its enduring appeal and value to collectors. Factory-sealed, boxed iPhones have been known to fetch nearly $40,000 at auctions. However, this particular iPhone’s fantastic provenance sets it apart from others.
In addition to this exciting news about the original iPhone, there are other noteworthy updates in the tech world. Apple has extended its free iPhone Emergency SOS service, which has already proved critical in saving lives during emergencies. Additionally, Mac users can now take advantage of an exclusive discount for new licenses of Parallels Desktop 19 if they want to install Windows on their machines.
Moreover, the Wireless Power Consortium has given its approval for the Qi2 wireless charging spec, which will soon be available in products starting with the iPhone 15 lineup. This advancement in wireless charging technology promises a more convenient and efficient experience for Apple users.
Lastly, an Apple TV+ drama series revolving around fashion designer Coco Chanel is set to premiere on February 14, 2024. This highly anticipated series will offer audiences a captivating glimpse into the life and legacy of one of fashion’s most iconic figures.
These updates from the world of Apple and technology showcase both advancements within the industry and the timeless appeal of classic devices like the original iPhone. Whether it’s through revolutionary features or captivating content, Apple continues to captivate audiences and push the boundaries of innovation.
