Coolpad Cool 5

Overview

The new Coolpad Cool 5 is one hell of a low budget phone. Although Coolpad phones are not widely popular in Nepal, I was surprised that the company was giving up such a good phone at a reasonable price.

The device has everything that one needs in a smartphone. But what are the specs and price of Coolpad Cool 5 in Nepal? Let’s take a look.

Design and Display

The new coolpad cool 5 has striking design and one of the reasons for this is color options of Gradient Blue and Midnight Blue.

These colors really make the phone look different. However, the chunky borders around the screen and thick bottom bezel is not something that you would want.

Even though the phone’s body is made out of plastic, it looks and feels premium. But there’s a catch. The phone observes fingerprints and smudges too easily.

Other than that, Cool 5 has 6.22 inches 720 x 1520 pixels display with 80.9% screen-to-body ratio. The IPS LCD display has a small notch, which is a home for the selfie camera, on the top.

Performance and Memory

The Coolpad Cool 5 is packed with Mediatek’s Helio P22 chipset. The Octa-core 2.0 GHz processor and PowerVR GE8320 used in this handset are a very common entry-level CPU and GPU.

This same setup has also been used in Nokia 2.0. The smartphone runs on Android 9.0 Pie just like its predecessor Cool3.

The company also claims that processor cores are made up of discrete units which helps the user to reach the highest clock speed when needed.

Similarly, Coolpad Cool 5 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The RAM capacity of 4GB is enough to run heavy applications or PUBG without any lags.

This provides you an uninterrupted user experience. Additionally, Cool 5 also has a gaming mode for boosting phone’s speed while hardcore gaming.

On the other hand, 64GB ROM can easily store your favourite games, applications and large files. Even then, if you feel like the storage is not enough, you can opt to 128GB using a microSD card.

Cameras and Modes

The Coolpad Cool 5 has dual camera setup on the back and a single selfie camera. The main camera of 13MP comes with 2MP of depth camera.

The rear camera has f/2.8 aperture which is very small and it doesn’t let more light enter inside the sensor so taking pictures in low light condition is quite troublesome.

In between the main and depth camera, there lies a flash that can be used as a torch or for taking photographs in a dark environment.

The video feature of the main camera is too good. While many low cost smartphones offer 720p video shooting quality, the Coolpad Cool 5 can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps.

Talking about the 26mm wide front camera, it is of 16MP with f/2.2 aperture.

This proves that the brand has focused on the selfie camera more than the main camera. One reason for this can be the increasing popularity of taking selfies.

The Coolpad Cool 5 has various modes to enhance the beauty of a photograph.

The phone has panorama mode, letting you to capture more scenes by combining multiple images.

Moreover, the HDR mode will let you take detailed shots by increasing exposure range.

Lastly, there is also a Face Cute mode that enables the user to add AR stickers, just like Snapchat, to their face.

Battery

The Cool 5 uses a Li-Po 4000mAh battery to power itself. This non removable battery uses Type-C charger to juice itself and comes with a fast charging.

We took a light battery test of Coolpad Cool 5 and it ran for a day. However, when we played a couple of games, surfed through social media and watched some videos the battery’s run time slipped to half.

There was no problem with charging and it fully charged in a little more than 2 hours and 30 minutes. Overall, the battery of this phone is tough and does its job rather well.

Multiple security

In today’s world everybody wants their own privacy. When using pin code or patterns to unlock the device, someone can easily open your phone if they find out the security keys.

Keeping this in mind, the Coolpad Cool 5 uses fingerprint and face unlock technology.

This helps to keep your data safe as no one else can unlock your smartphone other than you.

The fingerprint sensor can quickly recognize you and it has been made 12% faster than before.

Likewise, the face recognition feature also works really well but it isn’t as quick as the fingerprint sensor.
